Brenda Joyce Carter, Candidate for State House, District 29
Brenda holds a Master’s Degree in Public Administration with a concentration in local government. She is a graduate Fellow of the Michigan Political Leadership Program and is also a certified grant writer and fiscal consultant. Brenda has held numerous municipal appointments in the cities of Pontiac and Troy and has served on multiple boards including Delta Fortitude Foundation and the Women’s Officials Network and Foundation.
In 1998, Brenda moved to Pontiac Michigan where she immediately began working in her community. She worked with the Pontiac Community School Improvement Team and in 2003, Brenda programmed Pontiac Northern’s robot for the International Championship Huskie Brigade Robotics Team(F.I.R.S.T). Brenda was elected to Pontiac School District’s Board of Education and began serving in 2011 when the District was experiencing high administrative turnover with the largest per-pupil deficit in the history of the State of Michigan. This deficit, coupled with five of the District’s nine schools named priority schools forced the District to abandon its sports, art, and band programs. Today, only one school remains on the priority list and the high school sports, art, and band programs have been restored.
Brenda was honored as a Female Elected Official of the Year by the Ascend Foundation which promotes the power of education, community service and arts within the Pontiac Community.
