John Cherry, Candidate for State House, District 49
John Cherry lives in Flint, Michigan and is married to Teresa Villacorta. They have one daughter, Diana Cherry. John grew up in a politically active environment, participating in campaigns for friends and family from a young age. John’s childhood memories are populated with time at UAW halls, fishing with his grandparents and mother, hunting with his father, and attending U of M football games. John, Teresa and Diana continue the outdoors tradition spending time hiking, hunting, and fishing whenever possible.
John attended college at the UofM – Ann Arbor where he earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. After graduating he moved back to Flint and began working at the Michigan DNR where he has worked as a Service Employees International Union member for eight years.
In 2012 John and Teresa married. Shortly thereafter they created their own business, Flint Coffee Company. They import and roast the coffee grown by Teresa’s parents, who are small farmers in the Peruvian Amazon.
In May 2015 John was elected to the Flint Charter Commission and served as its vice-chair. The commission spent two years revising its charter and put forward a new charter that was approved by voters in the summer of 2017. Seeing the issues that Flint and other communities were dealing with and experiencing the failures of government first hand as a resident of the City and father of an infant child, John decided to run for State Representative focusing on true public service and fighting for a government that protects its citizens.
